  • Why do I need to know your budget before I start designing? It’s not so I can figure out how to spend every penny. Promise. 😂 Your budget tells me where we can splurge, where we can pull back, and most importantly, what actually matters to YOU. It’s part of the design plan, not just a spending limit.

  • We approach lighting as a layered system, not an afterthought—considering where light comes from, where it lands, and what happens in the room. We combine restrained architectural (ambient) lighting with task lighting, accent lighting, and statement fixtures, staying in the 2700–3000K range and dimming almost everything. The goal isn’t lights you notice, but a room that feels right. It’s the kind of design detail clients rarely name but always sense. #mcnicolinteriordesigns #lightingdesign #layeredlighting #idcvideo
  • You know that point in summer when nobody actually wants to go back inside? THAT is what an outdoor living space should be designed for. Not just a couple chairs you drag out when people come over, but a proper extension of the house.

Somewhere you can have coffee in the morning, hide from the midday sun, watch the game outside, and still be sitting there hours later when someone suggests opening another bottle.

For Project Abbey, the covered patio does exactly that. Deep seating, plenty of spots to pull up a chair, a TV, overhead lighting and the pool right there.

  • Where you drop your keys says more about your design than you’d think. Let’s talk drop zones.

  • Okay hear me out... my absolute favourite detail in this whole house is actually hidden around the corner! While everyone is standing around the main island sipping wine, no one wants to stare at messy blenders or stack of prep bowls, right?

So we tucked a dark navy scullery pantry right off the main kitchen zone. It’s moody, it holds all the chaotic kitchen prep, and peek-a-boo views through the doorway give the whole room so much depth. It’s like a little secret room that makes hosting completely effortless!

  • Fun fact: This entire condo was designed remotely. The homeowners were in Toronto. The condo and builder were in Florida. Meanwhile, I was up here, relying on weekly FaceTime walkthroughs and an incredible team on the ground to bring everything together.

You would think that would make designing something as detail-heavy as a bathroom nearly impossible. Honestly though, it just meant asking the right questions upfront and paying extra attention to the little things.

The goal was to create a Florida retreat that felt bright, breezy and easy to live in. We kept the palette crisp and timeless with oversized marble-look tile, warm brass fixtures and a dedicated vanity that turns getting ready into a slower, more enjoyable ritual.

We also reworked the layout so the bathroom supports a smarter floor plan, making it easy for family and overnight guests to share the home comfortably.

  • Can we normalize talking about the emotional side of a renovation for a second?

Everyone talks about kitchen and countertops, but almost nobody talks about the mental load. The bigger a project gets, the more decisions start piling up. One quickly turns into twenty, then suddenly you’re coordinating finishes, layouts, lighting, millwork and trying to keep the whole vision together.

That’s why hearing Alex describe the biggest payoff as relief really resonated with me. Sure, beautiful spaces matter. But helping her stop carrying the weight of every single decision? That’s just as important.

If you’re ready to bring your ideas to life without the overwhelm, let’s connect through the link in bio.

  • I actually spend way more time thinking about what WON’T annoy you five years from now than what’s trending today. Seriously.

Will those pendants still feel timeless? Will the island still work when the kids are older? Will the finishes age gracefully instead of looking dated in three years?

Those questions matter so much more than whatever is having a moment. That’s why you’ll rarely see me chasing trends. I would much rather design a kitchen that serves your family every single day than one that’s designed for the moment.

  • Millions of sofas end up in landfills every year.

Not because they broke, but because they were the wrong choice from the start. Wrong size, wrong fabric, wrong everything for how you actually live.

That’s the part people miss about design. It’s not about picking something pretty. It’s about picking something that survives real life… and still looks good doing it.
